Come on, hands up – is this you? Do you reach for your phone before you even get up in the morning?
It was me – for a very long time.
Before I had even said good morning to anyone or sat up in bed – I’d immediately reach over to get my phone. Every morning – sometimes even in the night if I had woken up!
To check what had happened on social media overnight for my business.
How many likes, how many comments, any sales?
Then I would check the weather, the news, my bank balance, my emails, my horoscope – all in the first 10 minutes!
And what I found or read during those first 10 minutes usually dictated my mood for the day.
Then it hit me.
It had become a habit – a bad one at that – and was not doing my mental health any good.
Somewhere along the way, I had become so eager to grow my account and make my business successful that I lost sight of the important stuff.
Stuff like taking a moment to appreciate a fresh new day.
To enjoy the peace and stillness when I first woke up.
The simple moments in life.
I now leave my phone on the other side of the room so I can’t just reach for it.
It’s fair to say social media has taken over our lives. A BBC study in January showed that we devote a third of our waking hours to being on our mobile phones – up 30% from 2019. Scary stuff.
As business owners, we’ve become conditioned to think that social media is the only way to reach people, make connections and grow.
It isn’t. We’ve just been led to believe that.
A website is the most crucial asset for any business.
It’s permanent – an open-all-hours shop window, a customer service assistant, a top sales person AND an engaging storytelling opportunity to bring new customers in, on autopilot, 24/7, 365 days a year.
And you don’t need to be glued to it or frightened to step away from it in case you miss something – for it to work.
Invest some time in your website now so you can regain some time in your day to enjoy those simple things in life.
